James Maverick
James Maverick is cousin to David, Steven, Jon
and Cat Maverick. Like them, he has the ability to mindwalk, and control
objects and people with his mind.
Like the other male members of his family he is an ex-Peace
Keeper, but that was never what he wanted to be. He always wanted to be the
captain of a trading vessel, but his father instead sent him to the Peace
Keepers.
He is an only child, his only sibling was born dead
and his mother died giving birth to his brother when he was ten. His father and
his uncle did not get on well so he rarely saw his cousins.
While in the Peace Keepers he married a woman called Rebekka. A few years after they were married however, he came home to find her in bed with another man. Broken hearted, he left his home and wife and started to wander through many lands before finding Beware. Finding a tavern called The Dancing Gypsy, he started to go drinking there on a regular basis, always returning home to his cousin Catherine, who generously offered him a place to stay.
After a while, Vana Rose, the owner of the tavern offered him a job helping to tend the horses. He jumped at the chance and accepted straight away.
While learning to use portals, he accidentally ended up at the Heartwarder Tower, home to Revel and Rapture Heartwarder . His arrival there however was not pleasant as he was thrown from the portal at great speed and injured his shoulder in doing so. Rapture, who herself had had a bad landing from a portal and was suffering from a concussion, attempted to heal his shoulder. While she succeeded, it left her drained. James quickly called in his cousin's friend, Jessica Corsella, to deal with Rapture's condition.
Talking with Rapture he found in her a kindred spirit. Both of them had been held in high revere for who they were, neither of them having any real friends and them both being outsiders to everyone else. They quickly became good friends.
When James spotted the man who betrayed his Peace Keeper regiment and fought him, he took several bad hits but in the end James prevailed and killed the traitor. Too weak to open a portal, he walked more than two miles to the Heartwarder tower to seek help, almost dying himself in the effort. After healing him, Rapture gave him a ring that if twisted when on his finger, will transport him to the tower. In return he gave her a small ball that when held would allow her to contact James.
Later, when the Dancing Gypsy was threatened, Rapture gave James a katana sword which she blessed so that when evil is near it will alert him by glowing. It will also do more damage to an evil person than normal. When James is threatened or in great danger, it will also teleport him to safety a short distance away and it never needs sharpening, no matter how much it is used. James however, knows nothing of the powers in the sword.
Fearing for his life, he passed memories of what he has seen to Rapture. Memories of things that will never be seen again. Getting very drunk that night they both admitted feelings for each other. Until that moment they had both been afraid of rejection to mention it. James also gave her the only remaining gift he had to give, limited powers of telepathy. She can now see James' thoughts and those of her family and his but no one else's.
For a while, he lived at the Heartwarder Tower, he and
Rapture planed to marry, as he felt that he had found his true soul-mate in
her. However, things were not to be. Rapture and her brother assended, leaving him feeling lost and alone once more. But
she brought to him Rachelle Ward. After several months, James asked Rachelle to marry him, and Rachelle in turn asked James to move in with her.
He currently leads a reformed unit of the Peace Keepers, made up of
surviving members of the Flying Eagles, Diamond Backs and Wolf Pack units,
which is currently helping at the Dancing Gypsy to rebuild the old farm
buildings and help with security
For christmas, Rachelle gave James a new sword. Without either of them realising it, this sword is also enchanted, although they have not yet been able to find out what powers are held within the sword
